The Sounds of Science: Engaging the Blind in STEM with Inclusive Physics

Peter Walters, Independence Science.

Learn the tools and mindset to design inclusive, multisensory physics and STEM experiences. Led by blind physicist Dr. Peter Walters, we will explore high-tech and low-tech adaptations to empower blind and low vision (BLV) learners in STEM through hands-on optics and motion experiments.

First, we will use simple, cost-effective, low-tech tools and techniques to adapt motion and dynamics activities, to empower blind students to actively participate in kinesthetic learning multisensory learning. Next, we will dive into making optics visible to the BLV with accessible diffraction pattern experiments which use the Sci-VoiceTM Talking LabQuest for real-time auditory feedback.

We believe that an empowered learning community which includes the blind through multi-sensory approaches requires thoughtful creativity rather than complex setups. Leave inspired with the actionable ideas and mindset to adapt labs for blind students, so they too can experience the transformative power of STEM!
