Abstract

The NSF-funded scholarship program, AIE-STEMPLOS (Access to Innovative Education in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Providing Learning Opportunities and Scholarship (AIE-STEMPLOS), specifically targets neurodivergent students’ persistence in STEM fields. Through a multifaceted approach, including tailored support mechanisms and immersive experiences, students are empowered to thrive in their academic journeys. From a student perspective, AIE-STEMPLOS has been transformative, shifting their approach to developing STEM identities and instilling confidence in their abilities. The integration of the Birkman Method to support student understanding of communication styles facilitates effective collaboration and leadership skills among students, preparing them for future professional endeavors. Additionally, the program has provided invaluable internship opportunities, further enhancing students’ practical knowledge, skill sets, and self-awareness.
Central to the AIE-STEMPLOS program is its emphasis on creating a sense of belonging within a multigenerational community. Students feel inspired by the supportive environment to pursue the aforementioned opportunities and explore their interests. A varied slate of field trips and interactive sessions allow students to share their perspectives and engage in meaningful discussions about how these experiences map to their future aspirations.
This panel will consist of four students who will share their insights, highlighting the impact of AIE-STEMPLOS on their academic and personal growth.
