Making Mathematics Accessible: An Intelligent Equation Format Conversion Tool for Blind and Visually Impaired STEM Learners

Dr. Sariat Adelakun, Federal College of Education Special Oyo, Nigeria; Abdul-azeez Balogun, Orange Innovation, USA; Semiu Lasisi, Federal College of Education Special Oyo, Nigeria.

Access to mathematical content remains a significant challenge for blind and visually impaired (BVI) learners due to the visual nature of conventional equation formats used in educational and scientific documents. This study presents the development of an intelligent Equation Format Conversion (EFC) tool designed to improve accessibility by automatically converting mathematical equations created in Microsoft Word into ASCII math format, which can be effectively interpreted by screen-reader technologies. The software employs a dictionary-based conversion engine that identifies mathematical symbols, operators, and structures and translates them into a linear, text-based representation while preserving mathematical meaning. Developed using C#, the .NET Framework, and Microsoft Office Interop Word, the application provides a user-friendly interface for document processing and output generation. Testing with secondary and tertiary-level STEM content demonstrated successful conversion of equations ranging from basic algebraic expressions to advanced scientific notation. The EFC tool offers a practical solution for enhancing STEM participation, learning, and inclusion among BVI students, educators, and professionals.
