Introducing the Academy of Blind Scientists

Dr. Hoby Wedler, Wedland Group LLC, CA, USA; Dr. Stefan Kilyanek, University of Arkansas, AR, USA; Dr. Michele Mele, University of Sannio, Italy.

The Academy of Blind Scientists (founded October 16, 2025) is a global network led by blind scientists, dedicated to advancing an inclusive scientific enterprise by mentoring students, developing and sharing accessible tools, and fostering an international community that demonstrates that science is not inherently visual. Through mentorship, research, and public engagement, the Academy works to build a global community where blind scientists thrive as innovators, educators, and change-makers. This presentation lays out the need for the academy and outlines its first initiatives and goals, including our first book club meeting to be held on September 12, 2026. Our first book is Project Hail Mary by Andrew Weir and our discussion will address the (friendly) question: What does Mr. Weir get wrong about blind scientists. All are welcome.

Dr. Hoby Wedler is a blind chemist, entrepreneur, and sensory expert with a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of California, Davis. Named a Champion of Change by President Barack Obama and a Forbes “30 Under 30” honoree, he pioneers sensory design and inclusive experiences that expand how people engage with science.
