Abstract
Data visualization is a cornerstone of modern information processing, yet it often excludes individuals who are blind or visually impaired due to its reliance on visual modalities. This round table discussion, led by Bruce N. Walker, Professor at Georgia Tech and Director of the Sonification Lab, delves into sonification—the auditory representation of data through non-speech sounds—as a powerful alternative for inclusive data exploration and understanding.
We will examine key themes from different stakeholder perspectives, such as design principles for effective sonifications, integration with assistive technologies like screen readers, challenges in conveying multidimensional data aurally, and ethical considerations for equitable access. Participants will share case studies highlighting sonification’s role in empowering visually impaired users in education, scientific research, and everyday data analysis. We will identify gaps in current practices and propose innovative solutions.
