AccessCORPS: A Scalable Approach to Enhancing Higher Education Accessibility and Research

Dr. Bruce N. Walker, Isabella Martincic, Norah Sinclair,

Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia.

AccessCORPS is a large on-campus student-led organization that trains undergraduates from all majors and disciplines to assess course materials for accessibility. Team members then work with (or on behalf of) instructors to remediate and improve the accessibility and inclusion of documents, slides, websites, and other instructional materials. We have developed unique training, onboarding, and project management methods specifically for remediating entire courses, quickly and with high quality results. Our curriculum includes accessibility history, law, and technology; and hands-on skills for remediating Word documents, Powerpoint slide decks, PDFs, images, math content, graphs and charts, maps, and more. We have built AI-enabled tools to assist our remediation program. In addition, AccessCORPS engages in research, advocacy, and outreach both within and beyond the university. AccessCORPS is intended to be scaled and replicated to other schools: this includes packaging up our training materials, process and methods, credentialing, and branding. This presentation will describe the AccessCORPS process, training, and research, including a demo of some of our AI-powered remediation tools.
